Mary Bemis's Bio

Mary Bemis is a visionary who has helped shape today's spa experience. She is passionate about wellness and healing spas and is a major voice in the spa industry.

The founder and former Editor in Chief of Organic Spa Magazine, Mary is also a founder of the D.C.-based Washington Spa Alliance. Her mission is to educate the consumer about healthy lifestyle choices and to make modern spas less about industry and more about healing.

A respected expert, Mary has covered wellness for a number of publications both here and abroad. In 1997, she launched American Spa magazine, an award-winning trade publication where she served as Editor in Chief. In 2004, Mary went on to help launch New Beauty magazine, where she served as Spa Editor. This was followed by stints as the Contributing Editor of Home Spa Design for the newly revamped Luxury SpaFinder magazine, and as Contributing Editor at Spa magazine. In 2005, Mary founded www.insidersguidetospas.com.

She has served on the boards of the International Spa Association (ISPA) and the New York Spa Alliance (NYSPA), and has appeared on numerous national radio and television programs, including CBS's The Early Show, CNN's Headline News, the Style Network, HG TV, Lime Radio, and Fox Health Network. She is an Editorial Advisor to Shape magazine and a consultant to a select group of luxury skin-care brands.

Her work (often writing under the pen name of Margaret Coventry) has appeared in many national and international publications and sites, including Allure, Care2.com, Glamour South Africa, The Huffington Post, Luxe, Luxury SpaFinder, Marie Claire Germany, New Beauty, Pilates Style, Self, Shape, Spa Asia, Spirituality & Health and Viv. She is the co-author of the anthology, Nature Through Her Eyes: Art & Literature by Women (The Nature Company; 1994).
