ISPA Media Event Proves Spa is Good Business
The spa industry continues to grow at record levels, and The International Spa Association (ISPA) has been there since 1991, documenting its growth and keeping us up to date on industry news and trends. This year’s exclusive media event, held at Gotham Hall in New York City, created an immersive experience where attendees tested spas’ latest launches and treatments, while getting valuable one-on-one time with spa directors, beauty brands, and their marketing teams.
Spa is on the Rise
New statistics from the recent PriceWaterhouseCoopers study, commissioned by the ISPA Foundation, revealed the “Big Five,” representing total revenue, spa visits, spa locations, revenue per visit, and number of employees for the US spa industry. The numbers, released at the media event, speak for themselves:
•Total spa revenue surpassed the $17 billion mark in 2017
•The number of spa visits increased from 184 billion in 2016 to 187 billion in 2017
•The number of spa locations increased from 21,260 in 2016 to 21,770 in 2017
•Revenue per visit increased from $91.3 in 2016 to $93.7 in 2017
•The total number of employees increased from 365,200 in 2017 to 372,100 in 2018

Bamford Haybarn Spa at 1 Hotel South Beach has always offered a variety of treatment that are heartfelt and connect you to the power of nature. They demonstrated a moisturizing hand massage that included a warm blend of pure sea salt and brown sugar, suspended in rich oils and body butters.
Beauty Changes Lives is on a mission to get you your dream job. Their goal is to promote career paths within the beauty and spa industries that you might not even know existed. The important campaign joined forces at the event with Borbolta, offering the attendees eyelash extensions.
Chuan Spa at the Lanham in Chicago brought in Intelligent Skin Scanning. Attendees had their skin analyzed, walking away with important knowledge on what steps to take towards better skincare. In addition, the spa provided a rejuvenating Jade Stone Eye Rescue Treatment, designed to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.
Elements Massage presented their massage wisdom with a demonstration of a new AromaRitual treatment. Using Shankara essential oils, the treatment uses aromatherapy as a tool to help you with your mood, energizing or calming you. They provided a massage to the hands, head, and feet, while using signature essential oils.
Foreo is a Swedish creation, aiming to start a face mask revolution that will make you forget about your sheet mask. The spa-level mask treatment is meant to be convenient for your busy lifestyle, it only takes 90 seconds and uses advanced Korean formulas to refresh and revive the skin.
Four Seasons Resort Lanai is a place of solace that offers their guests unique activities, such as professional tennis lessons or a horseback ride that ends with zen yoga at sunset. At the event, they offered a Lanai Tai Signature Scrub treatment, using fresh pineapple to promote Hawaiian healing and a Sports Massage, promoting living and playing well.
Glen Ivy Hot Springs has guests flocking to them for their well-known mineral water springs and other wellness offerings in Southern California. Using the power of scent, sound, and touch, the spa offered a Tranquility Pro Sleep Ritual, meant to balance the senses.
Hilton highlighted a new fitness concept, revolutionizing the way you pursue fitness while away from home. The hotel created Five Feet to Fitness rooms that allow their guests to exercise without leaving the hotel room. The rooms will offer over 11 different fitness and accessory options.
Hippocrates Health Institute wowed attendees with a calming and vibrating sound, that could be heard throughout the hall. They showcased a Vibrational Sound Healing Treatment, using the didgeridoo. Experiencing the ancient Aboriginal instrument, attendees sat while their individual vibration was lifted, aligned, and balanced. This genuine experience is just one example of the life-changing offerings at the Institute.
Kohler Waters Spa showed off images of their Vichy showers while offering a sample of their new Thermal Hydro Body Treatment. The treatment was demonstrated by wrapping guests’ hands in self-heating mud and finishing off the treatment with remineralizing moisturizer. The spa is infamous for its hydrotherapy treatments that continue to evolve.
Make up Factory is a made-in-Germany cosmetics company that helps cultivate the idea that spa guests occasionally desire a professional make-up service before walking out of the spa. Lindsay Ebbin, Co-Founder and President, was there to demonstrate makeup tips and provided guests with makeup touch-ups.
Sandals Resorts International was on hand to spread the word that their spas are an important part of the resorts. They offered an Insta Sculpt and Glow Mini Treatment. The treatment involved a gentle mini peel and Vitamin C infusion, followed by a chilled jade stone massage, leaving your skin brightened and feeling firmer.
Technogym allowed attendees to try the SkillRow. The machine is entirely controlled by the user, and it is the first fully connected indoor rowing equipment, training both cardio and power at an athlete level. It is meant to be used by every-day athletes and professionals in order to improve performance.
The Edgewater Spa allowed guests to relax and revive their hands with an Anti-Aging Hand Treatment by Circadia. The luxurious treatment exfoliated the hands and provided hydration using a Caviar Lime PassionFruit Enzyme Mask.
The HydraFacial Company presented its tailored treatments for face and lips. They highlighted a signature HydraFacial, removing dead skin cells and extracting impurities, then bathing the new skin with cleansing, hydrating, and moisturizing serums.
YO1 Luxury Nature Cure is a new wellness destination in the Catskill Mountains. Representatives were there to spread the word about their one-of-a-kind luxury resort and highlighted an Ayurvedic Foot Massage Treatment. The treatment is meant to bring relief to tired feet using a Vata-balancing Ayurvedic oil, targeting the two vital energy points in your feet.
